Please
read below to find out what the money you are helping us to
raise is being spent on:
Billee has a speech therapist to assist with feeding issues, an
OT who assists with equipment needs and a vision aid from The Royal
Institute for deaf and blind children. These are all government
funded and visit her approx every 2 - 3 weeks. Unfortunately so far
they have been unable to supply her with a physiotherapist.
Annette, Melissa and Ana are all amazing ladies who are great at
what they do.
They are a fantastic help to us and I don't know what we would
do without their ongoing support and knowledge.
However we feel that for Billee to have the best chance of
developing further she needs constant and continuous intense
therapy which can obviously only be carried out by us, her
parents.
Because of this Billee is currently involved in a
programme with The Australian Institute for the Achievement of
Human potential (AIAHP) which is tailored to her specific
needs.
There is also a very effective form of physical therapy
called ABR (Advanced bio-Mechanical rehabilitation) which Billee
will start in February 2009.
Both of these programmes are not funded and are very expensive
and this is the reason why so many fantastic people are fundraising
for Billee.
AIAHP
We are currently doing the following things with Billee:
* A number of exercises using lights and shapes to improve her
vision.
* Sensory and balance work to help her to be able to feel
different textures and to become aware of her own body and
space.
* A respiratory programme to improve Billee's breathing and to
avoid her chest becoming under developed (which is very common in
brain injured children).
* A nutritional plan that sees that she is avoiding specific
foods and that she is getting the correct vitamins for her
needs.
ABR
THERAPY
The ABR technique addresses the structure of the body to
hopefully help improve function. ABR gradually repairs the
"core structures" of the internal muscles - the myofascia - by
applying a technique of gentle application of pressure by hand
using specialised materials.
This technique improves the volume and tone of the myofascia
which gradually in turn improves the musculoskeletal structure and
creates improved capacity for functions such as better swallowing,
eating, drinking and breathing, sitting in a balanced, independent
way; more stable weight-bearing and more effective use of arms and
hands.'
We need to attend 3 clinics per year where we will be trained in
the technique. One of these clinics is in Singapore where Billee is
assessed by the inventor of the therapy and the other 2 in Avoca
(central coast). ABR is non intrusive and very gentle on the
patient but needs to be done manually each day for at least 3
hours.
We are very lucky to be starting our training in February of
this year as Leonid (the inventor) is visiting Australia for the
first time which means that he will be assessing Billee here
instead of us travelling to Singapore this year.
There is also an ABR machine that can be hired to perform
extra hours over night while your child is
sleeping.
Billee also sees a chiropractor regularly for cranial sacral
therapy. A small amount of this is covered by a health fund but
there are still out of pocket expenses.
With your help we have been
able to book Billee in for her re assessment with AIAHP in April
and also not only pay for the first ABR training clinic but
also hire the ABR machine for the first 4
months.
Thank you all very
much....
